Dean L. Hohn

Artist’s Bio

I have had an interest in photography since childhood but didn’t start to take it seriously until 2011. It has become my passion and now my wife and I travel around documenting our travels through photographs.

Nature, its beauty and the wonder of its mysteries have always fascinated me. I find being in nature is very calming, relaxing and invigorating. I am continually intrigued by the various patterns nature provides. I am humbled to be able to use objects of beauty from nature to create an art form.

I refer to my work as Nature’s Art. I have been photographing birdlife for the past several years and enjoy using the birds in my photo-artistry creations.

I also enjoy photographing landscapes and wildlife. I prefer to photograph wildlife in their natural habitat where possible.

To ensure my work is displayed in the best possible manner, I have chosen to have my images printed on aluminium. This is done by a heat process that infuses the inks directly into, not onto, the specially prepared sheets of metal. The infusing process creates a super high gloss finish that has increased contrast, extreme sharpness with greater depth of colour that has excellent archival properties and are water and weather resistant.

Dean has been concentrating on photographing birds and has become challenged to capture birds in flight.  In the studio you will find several of his bird photographs and landscape works on aluminum.  His landscape works are created using photo artistry techniques of combining, layering, and manipulating photographs, as well as photographs of birds on metal and on paper. Dean regularly contributes his photographs of raptors to the Raptor Refuge annual calendar to assist with their mission of helping rehabilitate injured raptors.

His featured work for this month is called Nautica which is hung in Studio 14.

Nautica

This beautiful work, a sublimation print on aluminum, is a composite creation using images showcasing the beauty of Denison Beach which can be found on the East Coast of Tasmania near Bicheno.

Marilyn J. Patton

Artist Profile

I have always painted. Since moving to beautiful Tasmania, I have devoted serious study to painting through Leoni Duff and the Brisbane Street Art School, and other tutors including Lee Machalac, Martinho Correia, Diane Rappisi, Colley Whisson and Ross Patterson, Lyn Deiffenbach and Graeme Whittle.

Landscapes, Still Life, Portraits, animals and narrative paintings are all of interest to me. I am particularly attracted to peaceful scenes, and compositions that capture sparks of energy and expressions of the spirit.

My work currently hangs in Deloraine Creative Studios, and in the  Gallery Pejean located in Launceston. My paintings are included in private collections in Australia and in the United States.

Our studio shows the results of our happy creative pursuits including paintings, photographs, prints, fine art photo artistry images and photographs of endemic birds printed on aluminum, works on paper and a selection of greeting cards.

Marilyn has been painting portraits, still life and landscapes.  She spent several weeks painting ‘en plein air’ in the Flinders Ranges with a wonderful group of fellow art makers, and since her return she has been working on several commissioned paintings as well as a portrait for the 2024 Circular Head CHArchibald Portrait Competition.  Recently, she has begun a year-long project to create a drawing/a painting a day for a year.  This project may not create 365 works of completed art pieces, but the efforts will deepen her meditational investment in creating meaningful paintings. These project works will be posted on her Face Book site – Marilyn Patton Paintings – so you can have a look there to see the project as it develops.

This month’s highlighted painting can be found near the desk as you enter Deloraine Creative, Studios, titled “Ode to John Masefield” who wrote Sea Fever in 1902, which begins “I must go down to the seas again…” I love those words and that beautiful approach over the hills for the first view of the vast Bass Strait, especially in the afternoon. My favorite part of the painting is that late afternoon sky!

Using relief or linocut, monotype, collagraph, and dry point methods, Marilyn enjoys making original handmade prints on paper. She is a member of a printmaking collective that meets at the Hive in Studio 2 in Ulverstone on Fridays.

This relief print has been a popular seller: The Fishing Pier, George’s Bay, St Helens.

Marilyn’s paintings are represented by Margot Baird of Back Room Studios, Launceston. You can see more of her work on the website:  www.backroomstudios.com.au

Spring Sensations Art

I am a self taught water colour artist. I started painting several years ago. My art is inspired by a love of animals. I love their facial expressions, personalities and quirkiness.

I first started painting chickens because I love their facial expressions, and chickens have a lot of attitude, hence my collection ‘Chooks with attitude’

My art evolved from painting chickens to painting other animals, birds, cats, and dogs. I am also commissioned to paint pet portraits.

From my art I have a good collection of hand crafted cards, door hangers, magnets and other items I can put my art on.

Stuart Marshall

Stuart’s artistic journey started with a herd of angora goats in Brisbane, where he learned how to spin mohair. He joined the Spinners & Weavers group in Hervey Bay to expand his skills and in time took on the role of President of the Spinners, Weavers & Fibre Artists Group.

Stuart specialises in felting with Tasmanian merino wool, silk and other natural fibres as he believes it allows him to create more durable and creative designs. He uses this method in the creation of his range of hats, scarfs, wraps, bags and other accessories. Felting provides “more flexibility with the shape of the textiles” and “more flexibility with the fineness of the felt”. This enables him to make pieces that are thick and sturdy through to as fine as gossamer.

Stuart’s range of unique and colour rich pieces are aimed at stylish men & women looking for unique and warm accessories.

Driftwood, still alive in each beautiful piece, which was once a part of our nature lining our river systems and waterways, flushing out to sea and drying along the banks.

This driftwood comes from the North coast rivers.

Paddling along the river viewing eagles, platypus, horses, birds and along the coast whales, dolphins, pelicans and seals.

Personal experiences of life reflected through my driftwood art sculptures.

STUDIO 2

                                 Imogen Hewitt

I’m an emerging photographer based in Tasmania with a love for nature and the environment. I got my first digital camera when I was five years old, and since then have moved to Tassie and decided to pursue photography as a cereer and – I hope – much improved my work.

My aim with my photography is to help you see the natural environments making up our beautiful and unique island state just like I do; overflowing with magic and wonder down each twisty part and in every mossy tree hollow. Whenever I step into the wilder parts of Tasmania I am always awestruck by everything I have the privilage of seeing,  smelling and hearing. I hope that my photographs can bring even a fraction of that feeling to you and your home.

5% of the profit I make from my sales goes to the Bob Brown Foundation which has been doing crucial Earth-saving work since it’s foundation in 2012.

I truly hope that you have enjoyed looking at mt photographs just as much I loved taking them – and thank you for stopping by my teeny, tiny part of the world. See you next time.
