In Memoriam Jim the Weaver

Weaving

James Deghand (Jim the Weaver) was a spinner, dyer and weaver of 50 years experience. He lived and worked at his bush property in Jackeys Marsh, Tasmania as well as in his studio at the DCS. He was represented in private and public collections including the Wolfsonian Museum, Miami Florida, National Gallery in Canberra and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery of Tasmania, Launceston.

Jim was initially inspired by the knotted rugs of Persia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Also by tribal societies in North and South America and Africa. He used primarily woollen yarn in his rugs, blankets and tapestry wall hangings. He produced the yarn himself taking it from the raw fleece through the cleaning, carding, spinning and plant-dying processes. Invested in each piece is hundreds of hours of meticulous work all done by hand as it has been done for centuries past. Each item is unique and crafted to last for generations.

Jim will be remembered for his perfected craft, his wealth of knowledge, and his kind and gentle nature. A true gentleman Jim wove his latest creations at the Deloraine Creative Studios. He will be forever missed by all who knew him.

The Third and Final Edition of James L Deghand’s Book,
‘The Fundamentals of Plant Dyeing’
is available at the studio for purchase at $20.

Dean L. Hohn

Artist’s Bio

I have had an interest in photography since childhood but didn’t start to take it seriously until 2011. It has become my passion and now my wife and I travel around documenting our travels through photographs.

Nature, its beauty and the wonder of its mysteries have always fascinated me. I find being in nature is very calming, relaxing and invigorating. I am continually intrigued by the various patterns nature provides. I am humbled to be able to use objects of beauty from nature to create an art form.

I refer to my work as Nature’s Art. I have been photographing birdlife for the past several years and enjoy using the birds in my photo-artistry creations.

I also enjoy photographing landscapes and wildlife. I prefer to photograph wildlife in their natural habitat where possible.

To ensure my work is displayed in the best possible manner, I have chosen to have my images printed on aluminium. This is done by a heat process that infuses the inks directly into, not onto, the specially prepared sheets of metal. The infusing process creates a super high gloss finish that has increased contrast, extreme sharpness with greater depth of colour that has excellent archival properties and are water and weather resistant.

Artist Profile

I have always painted. Since moving to beautiful Tasmania, I have devoted serious study to painting through Leoni Duff and the Brisbane Street Art School, and other tutors including Lee Machalac, Martinho Correia, Diane Rappisi, Colley Whisson and Ross Patterson, Lyn Deiffenbach and Graeme Whittle.

Landscapes, Still Life, Portraits, animals and narrative paintings are all of interest to me. I am particularly attracted to peaceful scenes, and compositions that capture sparks of energy and expressions of the spirit.

My work currently hangs in Deloraine Creative Studios, and in the  Gallery Pejean located in Launceston. My paintings are included in private collections in Australia and in the United States.

Sybilla Scott-Smith

A GOOD YARN

was born from a futile attempt to return to sleep in the early hours of the morning. Actually it really began in childhood on a sheep farm in New Zealand, knitting beside my dear mother, who died far too young.

I have been a knitter for the past 30 years exploring every aspect of stitch manipulation possible. I have used all forms of natural fibres, with spinning and dying techniques.. This has been combined with also exploring the infinite possibilities of colour and knitwear design.`

I have been awarded for my efforts, and have been given the privilege of judging knitwear at various venues. It is now time for a change of focus, and so I am off-loading my extensive stash of hand spun and hand dyed natural fibre yarn, to share my enjoyment and pleasure with others. This will  also give my overworked hands a chance to repair.     Sybilla

Spring Sensations Art

Artist Ricky Hope

I am a self taught water colour artist. I started painting several years ago. My art is inspired by a love of animals. I love their facial expressions, personalities and quirkiness.

I first started painting chickens because I love their facial expressions, and chickens have a lot of attitude, hence my collection ‘Chooks with attitude’

My art evolved from painting chickens to painting other animals, birds, cats, and dogs. I am also commissioned to paint pet portraits.

From my art I have a good collection of hand crafted cards, door hangers, magnets and other items I can put my art on.

Sylvia Marris

I have always enjoyed drawing, painting and crafts. I started developing my artistic skills at a very young age and remember copying pictures that adorned the walls of my grandparents’ house. I have always loved colour, lots and lots of colour. I am drawn to the patterns and colour of nature, and after moving to Tasmania have also enjoyed referencing local birds and plants in my work.

I enjoyed teaching art classes for over 20 years in Canberra, as an art teacher in Canberra’s schools and in the local community. I have taught intuitive mixed media painting, art journaling and fabric vessel workshops in Canberra, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. I now call Deloraine home and look forward to teaching more classes from my studio space and in the local area.

In my studio you will find a mix of paintings, premium quality canvas prints, art cards and coiled textile vessels, all of which celebrate nature themes in lots of colour. You will also find me on Mondays and Thursdays working in studio 10 on my latest creative task. Come and say hi.
