A space to share knowledge, nurture creativity and learn new skills.

The pottery hub is space in Deloraine Creative Studios where individuals from Deloraine and surrounding communities can learn, create and share knowledge of the ancient craft. We run regular classes in wheel throwing and hand-building for new students through to advanced potters. The Pottery Hub offers a variety of classes which includes: 

  • 4 Week Throwing Course;
  • Beginner Wheel throwing class;
  • Beginner Hand Building class;
  • Glaze and Sip and;
  • Build and sip.

 Below is the timetable for all of the pottery classes that are currently available at Deloraine Creative Studios. 

4 Week Pottery Course

Have you ever wanted to learn how to create your own pottery? This 4-week course is the first step to your wheel throwing journey.

Whether you are hoping to progress to sell pottery in the Deloraine Pottery Hub, join our community or just try something new, this four-week course is perfect for beginners. It will allow you to experience what it is like to be a potter as you learn how to throw clay on the pottery wheel.

Over the 4-week course, you will focus on developing the basic techniques of wheel throwing with the guidance and assistance from an experienced tutor. Throughout the duration of the course, you will learn to centre clay, throw tall cylinders, cups, bowls, plates, trim pots and basic glazing.

Each week you will attend a 2-hour class which will focus on a new technique in the pottery process.

By the end of this course, you will not only have made four or more pieces of pottery, but you will also discover if you like working with clay.

What you’ll get

All materials including clay and bisque and glaze firing are included in cost.

What to Wear/ bring

Wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting messy, and covered footwear (not thongs or sandals). If you cut your fingernails short, it will be helpful for you. If you can, remove jewellery from fingers and wrists as the clay may cause damage.

Beginner Wheel Throwing

Interested in taking beginner pottery classes? The Deloraine Pottery Hub and Centre has over 4 wheels and an experienced tutor ready to help you learn the techniques you need to make your own unique pieces.

It may be an ancient art, but pottery remains as popular as ever – especially as we make the all-important shift towards more eco-friendly materials and pastimes. Plus, it’s the perfect indoor activity for children, teens and adults. In this class, you will create your very own bowls.

We also give our students the option to come back once it has been dried and fired, to paint their pieces with our wide selection of glazes (Additional costs apply).

What you’ll get

This class occurs every Tuesday from 1pm-3pm

Cost

$35 for a 2-hour wheel throwing session.

$30 for a 1-hour glazing session.

Beginner Hand-building

During this 2-hour session, you will be immersed in the ancient art of ceramics by learning hand-building techniques that have been practiced for thousands of years. Throughout this class, you will learn how to form shapes, join, and sculpt clay into your desired piece by using a variety of construction techniques. This class will allow you to make pieces such as coil, pinch or slab bowls or even jewellery, spoons and cups.

At the beginning of the class, the teacher will demonstrate the techniques and you will receive one on one guidance and assistance as needed.

All materials including clay and bisque and glaze firing are included in cost (excluding postage).

What to Wear/ bring

When

 This class is run on a Tuesday morning at 10:00am till 12:00pm.

Cost

$35 for a 2-hour wheel throwing session.

$30 for a 1-hour glazing session.

School Holiday Program

During the School Holiday Program, Deloraine Pottery Hub will offer a range of different workshops where children will be given the opportunity to create a range of projects using different pottery hand building techniques, painting and drawing techniques. Teen wheel throwing classes will also be offered to children and teens aged 12+. This workshop will be run over the school holidays. However, if the interest is there, class could be run after school on a weekly basis. Click the link below for more information and to book.
